I was sixteen when I met my first Volkswagen Bug. My father had just left his C-suite job at Ford, and we arrived in St. Maarten where he was building a resort. I had come from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and my Cougar XR7 convertible with air conditioning. It was 1969.
Love this story! My Dad had a RED Bug around the same time..but before that he had a VW Micro-Mini Bus. My greatest memory of that VW Mini Bus was my Dad driving me , my sister Beth (a mere 5 year-old), my brother, and my friends (with Mom for protection) to one of the first US Concerts for the Beatles. I am doing a whole blog on this, myself because that was one of the highlights of my young life. Somehow VW's have always been a background actor in many important things in my early life. When I think back, it surprises me, cause my DAD was a tail gunner on a B-17 for years (one of the few who lived to tell the tale) and fought Germany in WWII, but somehow he loved VWs...and so do I. Maybe because I loved everything my Dad loved.
