I’m in Washington DC this week, the guest of my fabulous daughter, Sarah Istel, who serves our country as Deputy Counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Yep, she probably knows if there are UFOs, but she’s not talking. I had a business friend, his wife, and their fifteen year old daughter, who hopes to be a lawyer one day, join us. We dined in the Senate dining room, toured the Capital in a way I will remember forever, and went to the West Wing of the White House at 9:00 pm for a small tour that included… well, the Oval office. I watched my daughter in her hood, with her colleagues who clearly like and respect her, and I watched her confidence in doing what she does and respecting those around her. And her generosity in showing us around was far and above what was expected. It was something to remember forever.
And you can add fabulous mom to your list of accomplishments. What a gift you gave to Sarah (and such a touching post from her to you) to encourage her to dream big. You gotta have the goods to get there, but if you don't believe, you never will. A great role model is the easiest way to believe.
I was the Account Executive for Katharine Gibbs in my first advertising job. This was in the 80's and they were really trying to rebrand beyond the secretary lane. It was a tough sell. As I recall it was a leap from 'Secretary' to 'Executive Assistant' platform. I was so clueless. The whole client team on KB were men, and they just couldn't wrap their heads around anything beyond these 'girls' supporting men in ever-greater capacities. But the wave was coming! https://www.aaaa.org/timeline-event/virginia-slims-cashes-womens-lib-declaring-youve-come-long-way-baby/?cn-reloaded=1
I love this post. Imus was a jerk, but I confess to listening to him for YEARS! He came to a wedding we catered decades ago (as the best man) and was drunk at the rehearsal. Went into rehab soon after...a good thing, of course.
